I don't know what happened in the barn, but thankfully, it didn't come up again. I started making a habit of spending the afternoons at Duke's. With my oven still out, I didn't have much of a choice if I wanted to keep the bakery going. But in truth, I enjoyed it.

Every time I came over, I brought biscuits for Charlotte, and she started meeting me at the door like clockwork. Duke usually stayed awake long enough to get me going, but within an hour, I had his kitchen to myself. And compared with the bunkhouse, it was chef-grade. After his nap, Duke would usually start in on my dishes. I had to admit it endeared him to me that much more. But no matter how fond I was becoming of our afternoons, I knew nothing could come of it. He was a Monroe. I was a Caplan.

We couldn't be a couple, but I'd started to wonder if we might manage a friendship.
